, in september, u.s. secretary of state john kerry made an off the cuff comment saying if syria gave up its chemical weapons then military action could be avoided. something the russians jumped at and that led to a plan to eliminate syria's chemical weapons. based on that agreement, the global chemical weapons watchdog set deadlines for syria's disarmer. and sent weapons inspectors in. syria has now met two deadlines in that process. last week the syrian government submitted a plan outlining how it will destroy its chemical weapons reserves. on thursday, a day before the deadline, it's a announced that syria has functionally destroyed the equipment it needs to create new chemical weapons. the next deadline is the middle of this month with syria's formal plan will need to be approved by the international atomic agency's executive committee. part of that will mean explaining how and where the government plans to detroit more than a thousand tons of toxic agents and munitions in order to meet its final deadline of destroying its entire stockpile by the middle of next year. kim, al jazerra. >>

in washington. you met with secretary kerry and you met with susan rice at the white house. what are they telling you about how they see hopes for progress in iran? and what did they tell you about the iaea and how they feel you are doing? >> we have, i have met with them, secretary kerry, susan rice as most others, and we discussed iran nuclear issue. certification, or with some other support to the peaceful activity, peaceful application of nuclear power, wide range of issues. i sensed strong support of the activities of the iaea. but it's a diplomatic purpose is not to talk about the ongoing discussions. with what the general has said about nsa's conducting surveillance, yet secretary of state kerry recently said the surveillance activity happened on a kind of autopilot within the nsa, without the knowledge of senior officials within the obama administration. so who's right here? is it a blame game going on? >> well, kelly, you know, let me just jump in here and say what i am against is the hypocrisy. the hypocrisy of former state department officials like this former ambassador who are now saying, oh, gee, isn't it terrible that we're gathering all this intelligence information? i can guarantee if you look back at his requests when he was the u.s. ambassador to romania, he made specific intel requests to try to figure out what was going on in some particular issue. so let's just make sure we call out the hypocrites. you don't get the request for intelligence gathering without having the difficult task of gathering intelligence. it just is a basic principle. >> there's a lot at stake. the terrorists can be right once. we have to be right all the time. >> exactly right. the collection the
